Anthony (Tony) Rivera Jr.

Acceptance Speech

Tony Rivera retired at the end of July after a 46-year career with municipal governments in Oklahoma, Texas, and Alabama.  He began his municipal government career in 1971 as a city electrician for the City of Okmulgee, advancing through several positions until appointed as City-Clerk-Treasurer in 1978. He later served as an Assistant City Manager in Greenville, TX, and Del City, OK; as well as City Manager in Seminole, Ada and El Reno, OK and in Gulf Shores, AL.  He also served for 19 months as an Administrative Consultant for both the City of Alabaster and Tallapoosa County in Alabama.

He was selected in 2010 to receive the Gerald Wilkins Award from the City Management Association of Oklahoma (CMAO) which recognizes members who are credited with strengthening the city manager form of government through their stable length of service to cities; dedication to civic activities; and participation in, and contribution to, CMAO; and commitment to the ICMA Code of Ethics.

In 1991 he was elected as President of the City Management Association of Oklahoma; and in 1995 he was also elected as President of the Alabama City/County Manager Association, where he served for 14 years.

Tony served as President of Kiwanis or Rotary Clubs in five communities.
