Stanley Alexander
Stanley Warren Alexander, a native of Phillips, Texas, served nearly 32 years on The Village City Council in two stints. His first service on the council was from May 1971 until late November 1978, when he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He was re-elected to the city council in May 1985 and served this time for 24 years until he did not seek re-election in May 2009.
In 1986, trustees of the Oklahoma Municipal Assurance Group tapped him to fill a vacancy on that board. Subsequently, in contested elections for this statewide board, member cities and towns chose him for a record seven consecutive, three-year terms. His 23 years of service on the OMAG board ended in May when he was no longer a member of the city council. Alexander is credited as being one of the few municipal governing body officials nationwide in the early 1980s who understood and supported the innovative concept of public entity risk and benefits pooling - such as OMAG. His vision for this concept was especially remarkable since he was a founder of the Alexander and Strunk Insurance Agency, and many in the insurance industry opposed public entity pooling. During these years, he served eight one-year terms as Mayor of The Village and two terms as Chairman of the OMAG board.
After retiring from the city council, the council selected him as the first inductee into The Village Hall of Fame. During his 32 years of municipal service, he was also actively involved in numerous initiatives on behalf of cities and towns through the Oklahoma Municipal League, the Oklahoma Conference of Mayors and the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments.
In May 2009, the Oklahoma House of Representatives adopted a citation to commemorate his distinguished career and outstanding record of public service. In addition to his numerous contributions to local government, Alexander also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He also served as President of the North Oklahoma City Rotary Club and as Chairman of the Board of the North Oklahoma City YMCA.
